Rev. Canon John E. Madden

The Rev. Canon John E. Madden died at his home in Laurel Sept. 9, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 80.

Born in the Bronx on April 9, 1937, to James and Lilly Madden, he later attended Queens College, Nashotah House Theological Seminary and St. Vladimir’s Yeshiva.

For 54 years, he was an Episcopal priest serving at St. John the Baptist Church in Center Moriches and St. Thomas of Canterbury in Smithtown.

He had been a resident of the North Fork for the past 22 years and a member of Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck.0

Surviving are his wife Gail (née Murphy), whom he married June 28, 1992, at Christ Church in Babylon; four children, Patrick Madden and his partner, Mark Hyman of Boston, Don Venezia and his wife, Lynda, of New Jersey, Liz and her husband, Neil Orlando of Maryland and Amanda Venezia and her fiancé, Bill Lehman of Virginia; a sister, Nora and her husband, Robert Seplavy of Bay Shore and four grandchildren, Steven, James, Alina and Julia Venezia.

Services will be held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation with The Right Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, officiating at a date and time to be announced. Interment will take place at Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon.
