Southampton Blotter: Riverhead man blocked traffic, ended up in cuffs

A Riverhead man was arrested on a felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle charge last Monday after he was spotted in the middle of Priscilla Avenue blocking traffic, according to Southampton Town police. 

Jose Canelzet, 38, made a U-turn and sped off when police turned on their lights and sirens, officials said. Mr. Canelzet was followed as he pulled into a driveway and parked at the rear of a residence, police said. Police found an open beer can in plain sight in a cup holder and Mr. Canelzet was found to be intoxicated, authorities said. He was also driving without a license, police said.

He was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, DWI, aggravated DWI, drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway and three violations.

• A Westhampton Beach man was caught recklessly driving Wednesday and arrested after he fled, then hid from police in Riverside.

Robert Rogers, 54, was observed speeding on Ludlam Avenue and did not pull over when police moved to pull him over, officials said. The pursuit ended on Flanders Road after Mr. Rogers committed several more traffic infractions and he fled on foot, police said. He was found hiding in a backyard after a search of the area, police said.

Mr. Rogers was charged with reckless driving, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, third-degree unlawful fleeing from a police officer and a violation, according to police.

• Zhaneera Shabazz, 18, of Riverhead was arrested Saturday after she was reported refusing to leave the Valero gas station on Peconic Avenue in Riverside.

Ms. Shabazz reportedly yelled slurs at a store clerk and continued to do so when she walked out of the store after multiple requests, then slammed her hand on the store’s glass door, police said. She continued cursing and refused to leave and was placed under arrest, police said.

Ms. Shabazz was charged with resisting arrest and three violations, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
