Cops: Two armed robberies at gas stations minutes apart

Riverhead Town police are investigating two armed robberies that occurred less than 15 minutes apart Saturday night at two gas stations.

Police responded to the Mobile gas station on County Road 58 to a report of a robbery at about 7:30 p.m. The victim at the gas station reported two men wearing masks displayed a handgun and demanded money and cigarettes. The suspects — only described as black men — fled the area before police arrived, according to a police press release.

Riverhead detectives responded to investigate and about 13 minutes later at 7:43 p.m. police were called to the Mobil gas station on Middle Country Road in Calverton for another armed robbery. The victim there reported a similar scenario of two mean wearing masks demanding money and cigarettes while displaying a handgun.

Police said the robberies appear to be committed by the same suspects.

The two men fled the Calverton gas station with money and cigarettes. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything related to either robbery to call police at 631-727-4500. All calls will remain confidential.
