Joan M. Cobey

Lifelong North Fork resident Joan M. Cobey died May 14 at the age of 89. She was a 60-year resident of South Jamesport.

The daughter of Catherine (Walaszek) and Joseph Sowinski, she was born Jan. 28, 1929, in Greenport.

Ms. Cobey was the salutatorian of Riverhead High School’s Class of 1946. After high school, she worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

On Oct. 29, 1949, she married Thomas Cobey Jr. at St Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Family members said shortly after marriage, Ms. Cobey devoted her life to the care of her home and family. She was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Predeceased by her husband in 1997, Ms. Cobey is survived by her children, Linda Zeleznik of Salt Point, N.Y., Laura Anderson of Aquebogue and Thomas Cobey III of Riverhead; three grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Cobey will be buried with her husband at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.
