Russell C. Wells Sr. of Riverhead died May 25 at Dominican Village in Amityville. He was 96.
The son of John and Carrie (Wella) Wells, he was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Greenport and graduated from Greenport High School in 1941.
Mr. Wells served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He worked as a methods engineer for Grumman in Calverton.
He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Family members said he enjoyed sports, gardening, model airplanes and fishing.
Predeceased by his wife, Therese, in 2000, Mr. Wells is survived by his children, Russell Jr., Richard, Kevin, and Jeanne Ann Shilling; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday, May 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
