Funeral procession scheduled Monday for K-9 cop Rocky

Riverhead residents will have a chance to pay their respects to Rocky, the K-9 cop killed in the line of duty earlier this week, at a funeral procession scheduled for Monday.

Following a private service for Rocky, an 8-year-old German shepherd, the funeral procession will begin at Riverhead Town Veteran’s Memorial Park in Calverton at approximately 11 a.m. The procession will then leave the park heading east on Middle Country Road and from there will continue north on Howell Avenue, ending at Riverhead Town Police headquarters.

Anyone wishing to view the funeral procession can go to Veteran’s Memorial Park prior to the scheduled start time of 11 a.m. Or people can go to Riverhead Town Hall at 200 Howell Ave. in Riverhead, according to police.

“The Riverhead Town Police Department continues to receive an outpouring of support from the community, with many asking how they are able to help the department during this difficult time,” a press release from Riverhead Town police said.

Donations in memory of Rocky can be sent to assist with K-9 related expenses such as acquisition, training, maintenance, equipment and veterinarian expenses. All donations will benefit the department’s K-9 unit. Checks can be sent payable to “Riverhead Town Police Department — K9” and addressed to “Office of the Police Chief (K9)” at 210 Howell Avenue, Riverhead, N.Y. 11901.

A memorial outside police headquarters pays tribute to Ace, a K-9 that was killed in the line of duty in 1993. A service for Ace was held outside the Riverhead Police Department in October 1993 and it featured 48 fellow K-9 cops who came from departments throughout Long Island and New York City.
