Southampton Blotter: Flanders man arrested under Leandra’s Law

Southampton Town police arrested a Flanders man Saturday under Leandra’s Law.

Melvin Velasquez, 25, was stopped near Bellows Pond Road in Hampton Bays at approximately 11:07 p.m. He was found to be intoxicated and had a child in the vehicle.

Police did not say how old the child was, but Leandra’s Law makes it an automatic felony to drive drunk in New York with a child under the age of 16.

Mr. Velasquez was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing.

• Southampton police arrested a Riverhead man on several drug charges Sunday.

Police attempted to stop Carl Worthington for a traffic infraction at 10:57 p.m., while he was riding a bicycle near Vail Avenue and Pine Street in Riverside, officials said.

Officials said Mr. Worthington, 40, refused to comply and a violent struggle ensued.

When taken into custody, he was found to be under the influence of drugs and in possession of more than 500 milligrams of cocaine packaged for sale, police said.

He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor; criminally using drug paraphernalia second-degree, a class B misdemeanor; as well as resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, both class A misdemeanors.

Mr. Worthington also faces two felony charges for third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

• Police arrested a Staten Island man for driving drunk in Riverside Saturday.

After being stopped for failure to maintain his lane, police said, Alexander Improta, 26, failed standard field sobriety tests.

Mr. Improta was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWI.

• A Riverside man was arrested for driving drunk Sunday.

Marvin Chic-Alvarado, 29, was involved in a two-vehicle accident near Donald Avenue around 3:56 p.m. and was found to be intoxicated.

He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

• Police arrested a 63-year-old Riverside man for drugs Sunday.

Eddie Buckley was allegedly observed hanging out near Marta’s Deli in Riverside after business hours holding a crack pipe containing crack cocaine, police said.

He was arrested at 1:27 a.m. and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor.

• A Ronkonkoma woman was arrested for possessing crack-cocaine in Riverside Saturday.

Police charged Amy Hissiger, 41, with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor.

• Southampton Town police arrested a Riverhead man for DWI in Hampton Bays Friday.

William Fletcher, 54, was stopped on Montauk Highway near West Tiana Road at 8:24 p.m. and was found to be intoxicated, police said.

Officials also said he was in violation of an order of protection, as his front-seat passenger was the protected person. 

He was charged with misdemeanor DWI and first-degree criminal contempt for violating the order, a class E felony.

• Southampton police arrested a Riverhead man who caused $1,500 in property damage last Wednesday.

Charles Zukowski, 21, was arrested on Pleasant Avenue in Westhampton around 2:51 a.m. after police found he damaged another person’s property.

A police report did not specify what was damaged.

Mr. Zukowski was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony.

• A Northampton man was arrested on a warrant for public lewdness last Wednesday.

According to a police report, Thurston Bell, 44, came to police headquarters asking if he had a warrant before going to Southampton Town Justice Court for unrelated charges. 

An investigation revealed he was wanted for public lewdness, police said.

He was arrested and charged with public lewdness, a class B misdemeanor.

• Police arrested a Riverhead man in Westhampton last Tuesday for assault.

Timothy Edler, 23, allegedly assaulted another subject in Westhampton last Monday, police said.

He was arrested the following day around 11:40 p.m. and charged with third-degree assault, a class A misdemeanor.

• A Riverhead man was arrested last Tuesday after Southampton police found him driving without a license.

Edgar Espinal-Chirino, 23, was charged with misdemeanor second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation for a prior alcohol-related charge.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
