Robert C. Mallgraf

Robert C. Mallgraf, a 68-year resident of Southold, died Dec. 11 at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home. He was 93 years old.Bob was born July 12, 1925, in Flushing, N.Y., to Ann A. (Boneker) and Ferdinand W. Mallgraf and grew up in Little Neck, N.Y. He graduated from Bayside High School in Queens and then attended Morrisville (N.Y.) College.

After college, he served for four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II — from 1942 to 1946 — aboard the USS Franklin CV13 aircraft carrier. He attained the rank of Electronics Technician’s Mate 3rd Class and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (two stars), American Campaign Theatre Medal, Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal.

On Dec. 16, 1950, Bob married the love of his life, Phyllis L. Baker, at First Universalist Church of Southold. Together they made their home in the town where they were married and had two children.

Bob was a member of the Southold Fire Department for the past 65 years and a member of the Universalist Church. For 25 years he worked as a cabinetmaker.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two children, Alice Browning of Weeki Wachee, Fla., and Diane Mond of Vallejo, Calif.; three grandchildren, Laura Huffaker, Douglas Butner and Daniel Johnston; three great-grandchildren, Alasdair Huffaker, Ridley Madison and Sean Madison; and his brother, Gerald Mallgraf of Venice, Fla. Bob was predeceased by his granddaughter Kate Madison.

The family received friends Dec. 13 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where firematic services were held. Graveside services took place Dec. 14 at Willow Hill Cemetery in Southold, officiated by the Rev. Ben Burns.
