Mary Ann Galterio

Mary Ann Galterio peacefully passed away Jan. 5 at 101 years of age.

She was the beloved wife of the late Mario V. Galterio; a loving mother to Catherine Moran (Terrance), Vincent (Deborah Pirozzi) and Joanne Giacone (Ronald); the cherished grandmother of Francis, Genevieve, John, Nicholas and Katherine; and great-grandmother to Christopher, Stephanie, Marley and Veronica.

Mary was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Margaret and Charles Linn. She graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia in 1940. Mary was president of her class, a captain in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed at an evacuation hospital on the South Pacific island of New Caledonia, off the coast of Australia. In early 1942, the U.S. Navy desperately needed nurses and Mary was chosen to work on the hospital ship USS Solace. Mary married Maj. Mario Galterio in 1946, they raised their children in Garden City and she worked as a nurse at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The couple moved to South Jamesport in 1980. Mary was widowed in 1992.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home, 406 East Main St., Riverhead, N.Y., 11901. Interment will follow Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery.
