Bernard Arthur Heinisch

Bernard Arthur Heinisch of Southold died at his home May 1 surrounded by family members. He was 91.

He was born June 22, 1927, to George and Margaret (Antun) Heinisch in Astoria, Queens, and served as a seaman first class in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Doran, a mine sweeper in the Asiatic Pacific.

On April 30, 1950, Mr. Heinisch married Madeleine Donahue at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Together they made their home in Albertson, N.Y., from 1951 to 1992.

He retired to his wife’s family home in Southold in 1992 after a long career as superintendent of buildings and grounds for Garden City Schools.

Professionally, he was a member of the NYS Association of School Superintendents Buildings and Grounds. He was also a communicant of St. Patrick R.C. Church and a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Heinisch will forever be remembered for his resemblance to Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.

He was predeceased by his wife Feb. 15, 2016, and is survived by his four children, Barbara Heinisch (Malcolm) of Pawling, N.Y., Joanne Wright of Southold, Robert (Rosa) Heinisch of Tuckahoe, N.Y., and Thomas Heinisch of Southold; five grandchildren, James (Hannah) Perez, Jeremy (Elena) Wright, Daniel Wright, Gonzalo (AJ) Molina and John Paul Molina; his sister-in-law, Mary; and nieces and nephews, who reside in Huntington and Colorado.

Visitors were received May 5 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated May 6 at St. Patrick R.C. Church by Father John Barrett. Interment, with U.S. Navy honors, followed at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Peconic Landing or East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care.
