James Michael Marrin

James Michael Marrin of East Marion died at his home Sept. 29, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 76.

He was born March 1, 1943, along with his twin brother, Edward, to Raymond and Kathleen (Murphy) Marrin in Port Jefferson.

Jim’s life was the very embodiment of what it means to be caring, helpful and effective in life.

As a young boy he lived in Riverhead and East Moriches. He attended St. John the Evangelist in Center Moriches and was member of the first graduating class of Mercy High School in 1961. He was awarded a scholarship to Fordham University, continuing on to Fordham Law School, earning a degree in law.

He served as Justice of the Peace in Putnam Valley, N.Y., and became a New York State legislator under Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. He was appointed comptroller for the City of Yonkers, assisting with bringing it back to financial strength. While living in Keene Valley, N.Y., he served as attorney and Trustee for the Adirondack State Park Region in upstate New York.

Jim, with his love for the church, would often share stories of his first Mass as an altar boy at a very young age. He was very active in the North Fork religious community, especially at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. He was a lector and religious educator to youth, as well as available for counseling to all others as needed. As a volunteer for East End Hospice, he provided comfort and strength to many.

A man of many passions, cooking was just one. A cookbook or recipe was never needed, and a perfect meal was always had, from appetizer to dessert. Thanksgiving and Easter were his favorite holidays and there was always a seat and a perfect setting for more. Anyone who visited never left hungry, empty-handed or without words of wisdom.

Handy around the house, yard and in the garage, he was always prepared with the correct tools and could build or fix just about anything, teaching as he went along. He even supplied his daughter and nieces with tools so they, too, could carry out what he had taught them.

Family was always in his heart, his thoughts and prayers. More than a son, brother, cousin, father or uncle, he was a true friend and touched and will remain in the hearts of many.

Jim was predeceased by his brother Richard and is survived by his son, John Marrin; daughter, Helena Grant (Newell); granddaughter, Belle Grant; and Meg Lankow, his devoted, loving companion.

He will be dearly missed by his sister, Peggy Scott (Bob); brothers Edward and Brian; sister-in-law Bridget Marrin; nieces Bridget Marrin, Susan Edwards, Kathleen Marrin, Elizabeth Macedonio, Jennifer Marrin and Jeanine Marrin; nephews Richard Marrin, Jim Edwards, Brian Marrin, Mark Marrin and Kevin Marrin; cousins Eileen Sadasiv and Bill Corey; and 10 great-nieces and -nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Richard Hoerning Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

The family would appreciate donations in Jim’s name to St. Agnes.
