Vincent Papa

Vincent Papa of Southold died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 82 years old.

Vincent was born on July 6, 1939, in New York, N.Y., to Ada (Cannarsa) and Gaetano Papa. He was one of nine children. After high school, Vincent joined the United States Army and served from 1959 to 1961, attaining the rank of specialist fourth class. 

On Feb. 8, 1964, Vincent married the love of his life, Maureen V. Halstead, and together they had two children.

He was a member of Laurel Links Country Club in Laurel, N.Y., and Jonathan’s Landing Country Club in Jupiter, Fla. Vincent worked for AAA Auto Club of New York for 50 years, retiring as chief financial officer. He started from the mailroom and worked his way to the boardroom.

Predeceased by his parents, Ada and Gaetano, and siblings Eugene, Rosaria, Thomas, Ada and Joanne, Vincent is survived by his wife, Maureen; children, Vincent E. Papa (Nicole) of Patchogue, N.Y., and Annemarie Bassett (Todd) of Williamsburg, Pa.; grandchildren, Jillian Bassett, Jocelyn Bassett, Allison Papa and Melanie Papa; and siblings Paul, Victor and Linda.

The family received visitors Aug. 29 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 30 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. The Rite of Committal was private.
