Photos: National Night Out brings community and law enforcement together at Riverhead Town Hall
The Riverhead Police Department strives to be around for residents’ during their worst moments — but they also show up for the fun ones too.
This enjoyable community connection was on full display at National Night Out on Tuesday evening. Local police officers, first responders, town officials and community members gathered outside of Riverhead Town Hall for the celebration.
Families explored emergency vehicles, watched public safety demonstrations and enjoyed a barbecue, games, music, giveaways and visits with McGruff the Crime Dog during the annual community event, held nationwide on the first Tuesday in August.
The popular event was held at Town Hall from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. this year because of the ongoing construction of Town Square.
Other community groups and businesses got involved too, including the Riverhead Rotary who provided a dunk tank and the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce who passed out cotton candy. The Long Island Aquarium also brought a make-shift shark tank for photo opportunities.
Before the event, the Riverhead Town Board handed out awards for the 2026 National Night Out poster contest winners at its afternoon meeting.
