Alert: Emergency road closure planned for River Road in Calverton on Friday

The Riverhead Highway Department will shut down a portion of River Road in Calverton on Friday for an emergency drainage repair of a collapsed pipe.

Mike Zaleski, superintendent of the highway department, said the closure stretches down River Road from Connecticut Avenue to Railroad Avenue. The area will be closed off from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flaggers will be present to direct drivers to an alternate route, as the road will be “impassable.”

The collapsed pipe is an ongoing issue that had been temporarily patched up, but the highway department is determined to complete the fix permanently on Friday.

“There will be a trench across the road,” Mr. Zaleski told the Riverhead News-Review. “One day, it just needs to get done…because the pipe goes under and across the road, it has to be shut off for a little bit.”

Mr. Zaleski thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the road work.

“It just enables us to do the job more efficiently,” he said.
