Mattituck teen dies in pool horror as Labor Day weekend begins

What should have been the start of a long Labor Day weekend turned tragic in Mattituck Friday when a 17-year-old boy died after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool.

Southold Town police and Mattituck firefighters were called to a home on Bennetts Pond Lane shortly before 1 p.m., just days into the new school year and as families across the North Fork headed into the traditional final weekend of summer.

The teenager had already been pulled from the pool when first responders arrived and was not breathing, police said.

Crews immediately tried to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.

Police have not released the teen’s identity or provided details about how he ended up in the water, who found him or how long he may have been submerged.

Southold Town detectives are investigating the death with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said no criminality is suspected.

The death adds another tragedy involving the water on the East End this summer.

Earlier this week, 38-year-old Spencer M. Korwin, a former Team USA triathlete and father of two, was found dead in the water off Shelter Island after entering the water from The Pridwin Hotel dock.
