Wading River, Jamesport beaches join in on 37th annual International Coastal Cleanup

The 37th annual International Coastal Cleanup returns Saturday, with several North Fork beaches joining the global effort to clear litter from local shorelines.

Iron Pier Beach in Jamesport will host a cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m., while Hallock State Park Preserve in Jamesport will hold its event from 10 a.m. to noon.

Wildwood State Park in Wading River will host volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m., though park officials said participants often stay later.

The North Fork Environmental Council is also hosting a cleanup at Breakwater Beach in Mattituck from 1 to 3 p.m.

In Southold, the Southold Peconic Civic Association and Little Fish, a restaurant at 50 N. Sea Drive, are partnering with the Kenney’s/McCabe Beach Civic Association to clean Sound-front beaches Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to meet at Little Fish for coffee and the day’s itinerary.

At the eastern tip of the North Fork, Orient Beach State Park will host a cleanup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with participants encouraged to stay longer if they wish. The rain date is Sunday.

The International Coastal Cleanup is a worldwide effort supported by more than 100 countries. Thousands of volunteers clean more than 100 miles of shoreline along New York State beaches each year under the leadership of the American Littoral Society.
