Anne Marie (Thomson) Schmitt

Anne Marie (Thomson) Schmitt, 94, passed away peacefully on Sept. 17, 2026.

Born on Aug. 30, 1932, in Mandal, Norway, Anne was the daughter of the late Jules and Francis Thomson. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1937, arriving through Ellis Island. She grew up in Roosevelt, N.Y., and graduated from Hempstead High School.

Anne married Philip Schmitt on Feb. 5, 1956, at St. Kilian Church in Farmingdale, N.Y. They made their home in Farmingdale until 1980, when they moved to Riverhead. Anne and Phil shared more than 70 years of marriage until his passing in July 2026.

A devoted farmer’s wife and mother, Anne centered much of her life on raising her three children and supporting the family farm. Family was always her greatest priority, and she took great pride in watching her family grow through the generations. Alongside her responsibilities at home, Anne played an important role in the farm business, keeping the books and serving as the cheerful voice on the telephone, taking daily orders from the local farm stands. Her work behind the scenes was an important part of the family business and the life she and Phil built together.

Anne is survived by her children Philip (Debbie) Schmitt, Kathy (Stanley) Zilnicki, and Stacie (the late Richard) Stueber; her cherished grandchildren Philip (Courtney) Schmitt, Matthew (Ashley) Schmitt, Kristie (Derek) Matuszewski, Andrew (Corinne) Zilnicki, Daniel (Gwen) Zilnicki, Richard “RJ” Stueber, Robert Stueber, Delanie Stueber, and Ryan Stueber; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Family and friends were invited to pay their respects Sunday, Sept. 20 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Sept. 21, at St. Isidore Church in Riverhead. Interment followed.
