FedEx closes longtime Calverton facility, moves workers
A longtime FedEx facility in Calverton shut its doors last month as the shipping giant continues a long-term restructuring of its delivery network.
The FedEx Ship Center at 579 Edwards Ave. closed at the end of September because its lease was set to expire, FedEx Media Relations representative David Westrick confirmed Monday. Employees at the facility were relocated to a FedEx station in Ronkonkoma, he said.
Mr. Westrick said the closure did not trigger a notice under the state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act because the number of affected employees did not reach the threshold requiring one, with workers instead being relocated.
“The FedEx facility on Edwards Avenue in Calverton closed at the end of September,” Mr. Westrick said in a statement to the Riverhead News-Review. “Team members at the facility were notified several months in advance and have been relocated to a FedEx station in Ronkonkoma.”
The company did not disclose how many employees worked at the Calverton site.
Customers who previously used the Calverton center for package drop-offs are being directed to FedEx’s facility at 750 Middle Country Road in Middle Island, Mr. Westrick said.
“These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees — through relocations or severance, as applicable — while transforming our network and continuing to provide an outstanding experience for our customers,” he said.
FedEx has been consolidating portions of its pickup and delivery operations under a multiyear initiative it calls Network 2.0, which the company says is intended to combine operations, consolidate stations and reduce package handoffs.
The Edwards Avenue operation has been a fixture in Calverton for years. News-Review archives referenced the FedEx facility there as far back as 2014.
In 2022, the commercial property at 579 Edwards Ave. changed hands for approximately $7.69 million, according to a Riverhead News-Review real estate transfer report.
