Stanley A. Cichanowicz

Lifelong Riverhead resident Stanley A. Cichanowicz died June 1 at the age of 92.

He was born July 17, 1919, in Glen Cove to Adela (Lipnicki) and Konstanty Cichanowicz, and graduated from Riverhead High School. He married Eleanor Donahue on June 29, 1952.

A lifelong farmer, Mr. Cichanowicz owned and operated Chick Farms at 139 Sound Ave. in Riverhead where he grew potatoes, cauliflower, strawberries and vegetables. Because he was a farmer he was deferred from military service.

Mr. Cichanowicz enjoyed farming and worked hard. Before the Long Island Expressway was built he would travel every night to the Bronx Terminal Market to sell his produce.

He loved spending time with his family and also liked to go fishing. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, he enjoyed sports and was a member of the Riverhead Royals, a now defunct 1940s semi-pro football team. He was a member of the Long Island Farm Bureau, the Long Island Cauliflower Association and the Holy Name Society at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, his son, Stanley Jr., and his daughter Betty Valek, he is survived by his daughters, Teresa Mickaliger and her husband, Charlie, and Joanne Zilnicki and her husband, John; his sister Albertine Shableski; his grandchildren, Laurie McBride, Katie Reeve, John Jr. Zilnicki, Jackie Zilnicki and Peggy Valek; and his great-grandson, Paul Reeve. He was also predeceased by his brothers, John and Charles, and his sisters, Helen Sawicki and Ann Pelis.

Visiting hours took place June 4 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass was held June 5 at St. Isidore R.C. Church, followed by interment at the church cemetery.
