Laila Sylvia Dahl

Laila Sylvia Dahl of South Setauket and previously Calverton, N.Y., died Sept. 2, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with illness. Laila was born Nov. 7, 1940, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y., to Alma and Sigvald Dahl. A graduate of Fort Hamilton High School and Brooklyn College, she  studied costume design at the Yale School of Drama.

During her career, Laila worked in development and fundraising positions for various organizations including the Metropolitan Transit Authority, NYU Hospital and the American Lung Association. Early in her career, she also designed costumes for off-Broadway productions.

Laila is survived by her sister, Allis Dahl Johansen of Pompton Plains, N.J.; her niece, Susan Johansen Shiels (Patrick) of Pelham, N.Y., and their children PJ, Christian and Anna; her nephew Glenn Johansen (Deborah) of Orinda, Calif., and their children Trevor, Justin and Erik; and her nephew Steven Johansen (Patricia) of Lisle, Ill., and their children Heather and Marisa.

Laila was a gifted artisan and designer and had exceptional talent in the areas of drawing, painting, knitting, sewing and quilting. She had a unique ability to capture ordinary moments and turn them into beautiful works of art. Laila’s loving spirit will be missed by her family and many friends.
