Johanne Durkin

Johanne (Gevenski) Durkin of Wading River died peacefully at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead at the age of 73. 
She was the beloved wife of the late Ray; the loving mother of Deborah M. Durkin-Puia and her husband, Frank, of Ashland, Mass., Christopher Durkin and his wife, Danielle, of Mattituck, and Michael Durkin of Denver; the cherished grandmother of Alec Christopher Durkin and Annelise Ray Durkin; the dear sister of Carol Grzywinski of Jamesport and sister-in-law Patricia Viscardi and her husband, Frank, of Westborough, Mass. Johanne was also a loving aunt of two nieces and two nephews and a caring cousin to many, many cousins.

Johanne retired after 33 years from her position as secretary of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River in June, 2007. In September of 2007 she received the Saint Agnes Medal of Service from the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Johanne was an active member of Wading River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Riverhead Polish Independent Club Aulxillary. She volunteered at the St. John the Baptist Parish Outreach and at Hallockville Museum Farm. Johanne enjoyed tending her flower garden, traveling and most of all being “Grammie.”

The family received visitors June 14 at Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home in Wading River. A funeral Mass was held June 15 at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery
