On Nov. 6, voters who are inclined to cast their ballots will go to the polls. Many thousands, however, won’t bother to vote. People give many excuses for why they don’t — but they are just that, excuses.

In our democracy, the right to vote is the starting point for everything else. It is the foundation. Failing to vote is self-censorship, saying you are a nobody and you don’t care who runs the machinery of government and how your hard-earned money is spent. READ

Major party candidates in the First Congressional District and Second State Assembly district met for a set of debates at the Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue Wednesday night.

Over 100 attended the dinner-debate hosted by the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce before the Nov. 6 election. READ

UPDATED (Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.):Democratic Congressional candidate Perry Gershon is calling for an investigation into Rep. Lee Zeldin’s (R-Shirley) re-election campaign after voters were sent incorrect information about absentee ballot deadlines.

The postcard sent by the Zeldin campaign quotes Mr. Zeldin as saying, “The right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights guaranteed to us. It protects our democracy by making officials accountable to the people. I urge you to exercise that right, by completing your requested absentee ballot and postmarking it by November 6th.” READ

This is in response to the Guest Spot that appeared in the Oct. 11 edition (“Silence in Congress is not leadership we need,” Oct. 11). If you’re expecting a rebuttal of the “facts” go to the sports section now: there is no way anyone could have a discussion of any substance after reading the first two paragraphs of that childish screed.  READ

Candidates for state Senate, state Assembly and Congress attended a forum during last Monday’s meeting of the Flanders, Riverhead and Northampton Community Association. 

November’s elections will pit longtime incumbent state Sen. Ken LaValle, 79, of Port Jefferson against perennial candidate Greg Fischer, 61, of Calverton. Mr. Fischer ran against Mr. LaValle in 2016 and has sought many other elective offices over the years, but has yet to win one.  READ
