Welcome to Suffolk County League II.

Riverhead’s introduction to the league wasn’t a kind one. The Blue Waves, who played in League III last season, had their work cut out for them Tuesday in their league opener with powerful Half Hollow Hills East in town. Hills East is seen as one of the top teams in the county along with fellow League II teams Central Islip and Bay Shore.

It was easy to see why.

Riverhead staged a four-run rally in the sixth inning, but the Blue Waves fell short en route to an 8-4 loss to Half Hollow Hills East in Suffolk County League VII baseball action in Dix Hills Thursday afternoon.

Right fielder Zach Giannozzi smacked a two-out, bases-loaded triple and center fielder Tommy Powers added a run-scoring single for the Blue Waves (1-6, 1-6).

SUFFOLK COUNTY CLASS AA TOURNAMENT | THUNDERBIRDS 10, BLUE WAVES 0

For the Riverhead High School baseball team, the thrill and excitement of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in seven years met a jarring reality on Saturday. Reaching the postseason is one thing, but winning a playoff game is quite another.

Riverhead’s long-awaited return to the playoffs was a harsh one. The Blue Waves were blasted, 10-0, as Half Hollow Hills East played a virtually flawless qualifying-round game in the Suffolk County Class AA Tournament in Dix Hills. Hills East will next play either No. 7 Sachem East or No. 16 Bellport for the right to advance to the championship round. (more…)
