It’s the irony of ironies. Kian Martelli, perhaps best known for his jumping ability as a track and field athlete more than anything else, had been advised by doctors to avoid participating in sports that involve jumping.

No joke.

That medical advice came after Martelli tore ligaments in both knees when he was in middle school.

It didn’t bring him a gold medal, but Rickie Casazza turned a scary moment into a golden moment for him in the state winter track championships Saturday.

The Shoreham-Wading River high jumper had missed his first two attempts at 6 feet, 4 inches. Then the senior cleared the height on his third and final try. That enabled him to go on and clear 6-5 and then 6-6, leaving him in second place at Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island. READ

Kian Martelli was hurting — and evidently feeling great at the same time.

The Riverhead High School junior had his share of physical issues. His right knee was bothering him as were both shins. And then there was a hand injury.

Kian Martelli is the first to admit that he’s not the same athlete in training as he is in an official competition. When it comes to a track and field meet, that’s when the real competitor in Martelli comes out — all 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches of him.

From a distance, Riverhead boys winter track coach Sal Loverde could see the intensity in Martelli’s eyes as he stepped up for a triple jump in the Section XI large school team championships Monday night. “He’s fired up right now,” Loverde said. “Let’s see what he does.” READ
