Whoever invented Mother’s Day deserves a lot of credit. I think it’s wonderful that we set aside one day when mothers and grandmothers have the chance to be treated like royalty. For 24 hours it’s an written law that there will be no cooking and no housework for Mom, that margaritas will be served on the deck and that offspring and husbands must lavish Mom with beautiful gifts, lovely sentiments and lottery tickets. This is truly a day that every woman on the planet must cherish. As the kids would say, “Mother’s Day rocks!”

Speaking of those who wouldn’t mind a day when they could be treated like royalty, happy birthday to my brother Rich, who was born on May 13 a few decades ago, truly a grand entrance into the world worthy of a royal salute.

The Shoreham-Wading River Community Band will present its spring concert, “A Salute To Our Armed Forces,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 27, in the Shoreham-Wading River High School auditorium. The band will salute our men and women in uniform with American classics and all-time favorites. Admission is free; the band is sponsored by SWR Community Programs. For more information, call 821-8116.

Next Tuesday, May 17, is the election for the SWR school board and the district budget vote. There will be seven candidates running for three open board seats: Robert Alcorn, Jack Costas, Anthony DeLouise, Keith Field, William McGrath, Stephen Offutt and John Zukowski.

Save the date: On Wednesday, May 18, the school district will host a parent forum entitled “Bullying: What Should Parents Know?” beginning at 7 p.m. at the high school. There isn’t a manual that comes with the job of parenting and we could use all the help we can get. Whether you’re the parent of an adolescent or an elementary school student, this problem could impact your family. The evening will feature information and advice from an expert in the field, renowned speaker Alisty Keneth from AJK Diversified.

Let’s hear it for all the wonderful mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers out there. (They don’t call us “great” for nothing, you know.)

We’ll meet again here, next week.
