Suffolk County Historical Society has received a $4,950 grant from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network for the conservation of “Hell’s Gate,” a painting in its collection.

The circa-1910, oil-on-canvas work was painted by Ernest Lawson (1873-1939), an American modernist sometimes referred to as the founder of the Harlem River School and part of the Ashcan School. The landscape, done from Long Island’s north shore, depicts the convergence of the East and Harlem rivers with Long Island Sound.

The restoration will be done by conservator Alexander Katlan.

According to a historical society press release, “This unique piece fills a void in this area of regional artists from this period in our holdings.” It will be the centerpiece of the museum’s newly restored East Wing Gallery.

• An exhibit of illustrations by Jada Rowland is on display through the end of October at Cutchogue New Suffolk Library. Included are watercolors, oils, mixed media and digital images from some of Ms. Rowland’s 11 books and many magazines, as well as recent unpublished work.

• “North Fork in Color,” original paintings by the artists group Cloud 9, will be on view Sept. 14 to 28 at Southold Historical Society’s Cosden-Price Gallery in downtown Southold. A reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.

The group, which meets monthly, includes North Fork artists Adelaide Amend, B.L. Moyle, Dolores Castrucci, Ann McCaughey, Fran Reichert and Laurie Ullmann. According to a release, Cloud 9 painters are “fortunate to live in this rich pastoral setting surrounded by water, where the light and colors are constantly changing.”

• “Free-form, eclectic” papier-mâché sculptures of waterfowl and farm-kept poultry by Sage will be displayed this month at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. An opening reception is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

• An exhibit of paintings by South Fork artists Scott Hewett and Anna Franklin will be held Sept. 11 to 22 at Gallery Crossing in Peconic.

Mr. Hewett is a “pop-realism” painter of Americana such as beaches, fishermen, farm trucks, etc., set on the East End. With his large-scale works, he “transports the ordinary into art,” says a release. He’s also a footwear designer and musician.

Ms. Franklin, a native of Italy, is “equally at home with representational paintings as well as abstract …and will not allow herself to be limited to one form or expression and one medium.”

An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

• A reception for “Versatility,” paintings and drawings by Virginia Mackey, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Mattituck-Laurel Library.
