Recap: Cardboard Boat Race canceled for June 26, new date undecided

The Riverhead Town Board agreed that the annual Cardboard Boat Race will not take place on June 26 — its originally scheduled date — at its work session Thursday. However, the board had yet to decide on a new date for the event or even if it will be be held at all. Officials are concerned about low tide, the large number of bunker fish and possible fish kills and “mahogany tides” in the Peconic River.

Other items on the agenda include a proposal to increase water district rates to reduce an average deficit of about $320,000 per year over the past five years and a proposal to allow a company to build a bubble over the Stotzky Park roller hockey rink in order to make it an ice hockey rink. The board also reviewed draft resolutions for Tuesday’s regular meeting, including the resolutions needed to allow movie theaters back on Route 58.
