Aquebogue-Jamesport news: Winter talk at Jamesport Meeting House

Happy New Year to all of you! I hope your holidays were merry and bright. Ours were really fun, with most of the kids home. We ate lots of food and drank lots of wine. Now it’s time to get back to work with exercise and healthy eating so we can reach those 2017 goals before next December!

Living Water Church in Aquebogue started offering a course last week on budgeting and finances called “Financial Peace University,” with national speaker and financial coach Dave Ramsey. My husband and I took the course six years ago and it helped us to make some significant changes, but I am going to take it again as a refresher course and to glean new insights from the updated information. The DVD presentations are excellent — very informative and entertaining. The course is seven weeks long. If you have questions or would like more information, call the church at 631-722-4969 or visit lwfgc.org/financial-peace/. If interested, register ASAP as the course begins its second week Friday, Jan. 20.

Next Friday, Jan. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamesport Meeting House, the North Fork Environmental Council will kick off its speaker series with their winter lecture entitled “Living on the Edge” by Kevin McAllister, a coastal scientist and founding president of DefendH20 (http://defendh2o.org/). Kevin will address the physical and ecological implications of climate change on the North Fork. His talk will address projected changes in sea levels and what that means locally, as well as what our responses should be from a community level. For more information, call the NFEC at 631-298-8880.

The rest of January is pretty quiet around here. If you’re like me, you’re using the dark and the quiet to reorganize the house and clean out the clutter. We’ve made a lot of progress so far, but still have more to do. Johanna and I have been taking advantage of the mild temperatures to take some rides on her Surrey bike. It’s cold but still so much fun. Remember to honk and wave hello if you see us on the road!

Send me your news for my next column, due Monday, Jan. 30. Stay warm and dry. Have a lovely week!
