Photos: Riverhead Town’s ‘Pet Adoption Day’

Riverhead Town held its first-ever ‘Pet Adoption Day’ at the town shelter on Youngs Avenue Saturday.

Even though the event was slated to start at 10 a.m., Steve Clampet, his girlfriend Melissa Muller of Riverhead and Mr. Clampet’s roommate Tom Wood arrived at the facility at 8:15 a.m.

For Mr. Clampet of Shirley, it was “love at first sight” when he drove through the gates and saw Starr, a three year-old tan pit bull mix relaxing on the grass near the entrance gates. He filled out all the paperwork and waited as police ran a proper background check.

Mr. Clampet and Ms. Muller came back later with a brand new turquoise leash — Ms. Muller’s favorite color — to take the excited dog home. Starr had been at the shelter since January 3 of this year. There are 14 dogs still available for adoption.
