Aquebogue resident wins 50th annual ‘Photo Show’ contest
For years, Aquebogue resident Peter Van Dercreek had his photography students enter in the annual Photo Show contest hosted by the Friends of Riverhead Free Library.
Friday’s event, which was held in the Elizabeth Fox Overton Gallery at Riverhead Free Library, marked the contest’s 50th anniversary. It was also the first time Mr. Peter Van Dercreek decided to compete in the event.
His decision paid off. The retired BOCES photography teacher took home the top prize of Best in Show out of the contest’s 117 entries.
The Friend’s Choice Award went to Mary Ann Dearg.
The contest’s judges were Susan Romano and Adelaide Amen.
Thelma Booker, who has been the show’s chairperson for the last 13 years, introduced the evening’s entertainment, which included piano solos by Brandon Boardman, a performance by Renee’s REDancers of Riverhead, and Memory Lane performers (Ms. Booker, Jenny Corbin and Claire Boehle) with a skit about the pitfalls and process of accepting entries for the Photo Show over the years.
Laurel Sisson, co-president of the Friends of Riverhead Free Library, gave a presentation about the Photo Show’s history and said director Betty Overton started the contest in the Yellow Barn and encouraged travel talks and slideshows at the library.
