Cops: Wading River man charged with Leandra’s Law in Route 25 crash

A Wading River man was arrested on a felony charge Saturday after driving drunk and under the influence of drugs with a 6-year-old passenger before crashing his vehicle in Calverton, according to a press release.

Michael Winters, 45, was driving a white 2014 Ram pickup truck with a boy eastbound on Route 25 near the Manor Road intersection at around 10:00 a.m. when he crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole, Riverhead Town police said.

Mr. Winters was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center to be check out for injuries, officials said.

The child was picked up by a family member, police said.

During the investigation, police determined Mr. Winters was under the influence of drugs, officials said.

He was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated and under the influence of drugs, Leandra’s Law, and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
