Riverhead issues heat advisory as temperatures near 100 degrees
The Town of Riverhead issued a heat advisory on Tuesday, just two weeks after scorching temperatures pushed heat index values into the triple digits.
The advisory from the National Weather Service took effect at noon Tuesday and runs until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The National Weather Service forecasts a high near 89 degrees Tuesday and 97 Wednesday, with heat index values again expected to top 100 degrees.
“Stay cool by staying indoors in air-conditioned areas or outside in shaded environments,” the town said in a release. “Limit outdoor activity during the heat of the day. Check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbors.”
The town senior center in Aquebogue will serve as a cooling center until 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Town beach facilities will remain open until 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Lifeguards and beach attendants will be on duty from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to ease to around 90 Thursday and into the mid-80s Friday, with showers and thunderstorms possible over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
