Jamesport Bazaar moves fireworks up after July 4 storm chaos

The Jamesport Fire Department Bazaar will launch its fireworks show one day early because of rain in Saturday’s forecast — less than two weeks after a violent storm sent Fourth of July spectators scrambling for cover at South Jamesport Beach.

The fair — which began Tuesday and held its popular parade Wednesday — will open as scheduled at 6 p.m, Friday at George Young Community Field on South Jamesport Avenue.

At 10 p.m., Special FX Wizard Fireworks will make its debut at the annual bazaar, lighting up the North Fork sky in celebration of summer and America’s 250th anniversary.

Conditions are expected to remain dry for Friday night’s fireworks, with increasing clouds, a low around 69 degrees and a light south wind, according to the National Weather Service.

The clearer skies follow several days of Canadian wildfire smoke that caused an eerie haze to sweep across the region. State environmental and health officials issued an air-quality health advisory for Long Island on Wednesday. Air quality reached'”unhealthy” levels on Friday morning, the NWS said.

There’s a 70% chance of rain for Saturday, with thunderstorms possible after 5 p.m, according to NWS.

The schedule change comes less than two weeks after a powerful thunderstorm struck during Riverhead’s Fourth of July fireworks show at South Jamesport Beach.

Lightning and torrential rain sent spectators scrambling for cover as wind gusts reaching 84 mph tore across the East End, downing trees and power lines and causing widespread outages.
