Riverhead mosquito tests positive for West Nile virus

A mosquito sample collected in Riverhead was among 10 that tested positive for West Nile virus, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced Tuesday.

The other mosquito samples were collected in Southold, Bay Shore, Lindenhurst, West Islip, Northport, Port Jefferson Station and Mastic Beach.

So far this season, 22 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus, and three samples have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus. Two deceased crows found in Ronkonkoma on June 24 also tested positive for West Nile virus.

No humans have tested positive for West Nile virus this year, health officials said.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Most infected people will experience mild or no symptoms, but some can develop headaches, neck stiffness, vision loss, high fever, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis, and potentially death.

Dead birds could indicate the presence of West Nile virus.
