Riverhead faces another high-tide threat as nor’easter winds ease

The nor’easter finally began loosening its grip Sunday, but Riverhead isn’t out of the water yet.

Town officials warned Sunday evening that another round of tidal flooding could hit vulnerable waterfront roads and properties Monday, even as winds weaken and power crews tackle the remaining outages.

A coastal flood advisory runs through 2 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service forecasts 1 to 1½ feet of water above ground in vulnerable shoreline areas of northeast Suffolk, with shallow flooding possible on roads, in parking lots and around waterfront homes and businesses.

Riverhead’s next daytime high tide is at 1:40 p.m. Monday, according to the town’s Sunday evening advisory. The weather service projects minor flooding along the Peconic River around that tide.

“Do not drive through flooded roadways,” the town warned.

The renewed threat follows a weekend of flooded streets, fallen trees and power failures. Along downtown Riverhead’s waterfront Saturday, water spread across Peconic Riverfront Park as barricades blocked access to Heidi Behr Way.

Outages in Riverhead Town were limited Sunday, mainly in the Baiting Hollow area near Long Island Sound, where several trees were knocked down.

PSEG Long Island said Sunday evening that crews were working 16-hour shifts to restore service, although strong winds could temporarily make bucket-truck work unsafe. The utility warned that lingering wind and rain could cause additional outages.

The storm wiped out several weekend plans. The Riverhead Fire Department canceled its open house, including Sunday’s rain date, and is looking to reschedule it for April 2027.

Riverhead Raceway’s championship weekend was moved to Oct. 3 and 4, while the Wading River-Shoreham Chamber Fall Festival was pushed to Oct. 18.
