Storm-delayed Turtle Rescue fundraiser crawls into Riverhead

Jamesport-based Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons has moved its annual fundraiser to Thursday, Oct. 8 after last week’s nor’easter hammered the region, postponing the popular event.

The rescue is already at capacity, caring for more than 250 turtles of different species, including some permanent residents that cannot be released, according to fundraiser volunteer Christine Benosky.

Fall is also a dangerous time for Eastern box turtles, which are heading back to their hibernation areas and often cross roadways along the way.

“Many will be hit by vehicles and wind up in our care,” Ms. Benosky said.

Turtles have a slow metabolism and can take a long time to heal, leaving many new patients to spend the winter at the Jamesport facility. Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons describes itself as New York’s only native land turtle hospital.

Thursday’s fundraiser, originally slated for Sept. 26,  will run from 6 to 10 p.m. at Box Pickleball and Container Bar, 605 Old Country Road in Riverhead. Admission is free.

The Psychic Night-themed event will feature tarot readings and a gallery reading by Rock and Soul Tarot, turtle ambassadors and a basket raffle with more than 75 prizes. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Raffle winners do not need to be present. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 or 35 for $25. Online raffle orders, including payment and selected basket numbers, must be received by Wednesday.
