Riverhead schools unveils rendering of high school facade

The Riverhead School District has released an artist’s rendering of what the entrance to the Harrison Avenue high school would like after construction — if the public were to approve a $78.5 million for repairs and upgrades at district buildings.

The photo is available on the district’s website and will also be incorporated in advertisements paid for by Friends of the Riverhead School District Bond.

“This will create a modernized appearance in the front of the high school,” Riverhead Superintendent Nancy Carney told the News-Review in June.

The plan calls for new construction at all district schools except for Phillips Avenue Elementary, and includes $3.8 million for new science labs at the high school.

The vote is set for Oct. 11.

On that date, residents will also be asked to consider a second proposition to build a $7 million gymnasium at Riverhead High School. The second proposition is contingent on the passage of the first.

Officials said in June that a Riverhead Town homeowner whose house is worth about $276,000 would pay an extra $39.47 for the 2013-14 school year, the year residents would start paying the bond if it were approved by voters, according to numbers Ms. Carney presented earlier this year.

That amount would increase to $210.48 in 2018 and gradually decrease over time. That same homeowner would pay an average of an additional $25 per year if proposition two were also approved.

Anyone who would like to know exactly how the proposal would affect their taxes is asked to call 369-6711.

District officials are now embarking on a public relations campaign and are meeting tonight to discuss the proposal with the Parent Teacher Organization at Roanoke Avenue Elementary and tomorrow at Riverhead High School.
