Southampton Blotter: Jail inmate arrested for failing to pay fine

A Kings Park man was arrested while already in jail for not paying a fine on a prior conviction, according to Southampton Town Police.

Patrick Gordon, 29, was picked up at the Suffolk County jail in Riverside Friday morning and turned over to Southampton Town Police on an outstanding warrant, according to police.

The $205 fine stemmed from a February 2010 arrest at the Boardy Barn in Hampton Bays, where Mr. Gordon had been charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, police said. In that incident, he was warned to leave the premises but remained there, and then pushed a police officer and refused to be handcuffed when officers tried to arrest him, according to police reports.

Mr. Gordon had been jailed on a charge of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance — a sentence that ended Friday, according to Chief Michael Sharkey of the Sheriff’s Department. He was unable to say what jurisdiction that charge came from.

• Francis Groffman, 19, of Astor Drive in Shirley was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage just before 1 a.m. last Tuesday on Peconic Avenue in Riverside, police said. Mr. Groffman was a passenger in the front seat of a car from which an officer had smelled marijuana, according to police, who said Mr. Groffman freely stated he had marijuana in his front left pocket and also had a two 16-ounce containers of Bud Light. In this case, he beer possession was illegal because of his age, police said.

• Edward Persico, 33, of North Street in Manorville was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop on County Road 104 and Pine Street in Riverside on Dec. 20, police said.
Officers had received a call about an erratic driver and stopped Mr. Persico’s car. He was charged with moving from a lane unsafely and texting while driving, according to police. The officer then noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the car and located a plastic bag containing marijuana on the floor of the car, police said.

• Yeimi Lima, 28, of Middle Line Highway in Sag Harbor was charged with driving while intoxicated about 2 a.m. Sunday on Flanders Road and Bellows Pond Road in Flanders, police said.
Ms. Lima was observed heading south on Flanders Road and was pulled over for swerving, according to police, who said the officer smelled alcohol on her breath. Ms. Lima also performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said.

In addition to DWI, she was charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, moving from a lane unsafely and prohibited use of a cell phone, according to police.

• Solomon Drayton, 22, of Summerfield Lane in Aquebogue was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana about 9 p.m. on Jan. 4 on Point Road in Flanders, police said. Mr. Drayton was observed in a car that police said was parked in a “suspicious manner” at the end of the dead-end road. When an officer interviewed Mr. Drayton, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car and, after searching the car, located marijuana on the driver’s side floor of the car, police said.

• Kevin Smith Jr., 36, of Riverside Avenue in Flanders was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after a Dec. 30 traffic stop on Tuckahoe Lane in Southampton, police said. Mr. Smith was pulled over after he avoided the traffic light at the intersection of County Road 39 and Sandy Hollow Road. An officer discovered that he had a suspended license and found a box containing marijuana on the floor of his car, police said.
In addition to the marijuana charge, Mr. Smith was charged with avoiding an intersection or traffic control device and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, according to police

• A laptop valued at $750 was reported stolen from an unlocked pickup truck on Woodroad Trail in Flanders last Wednesday, police said.

• Someone kicked in the front door of a home on Van Houten Street in Riverside and also put holes in the sheetrock in the bathroom there, according to police, who said the report came in on Saturday. Nothing was reported missing, although police said a previous burglary at the house was reported Nov. 22, and copper piping was reported stolen.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
