Quick thinking saves motorcyclist from harm in crash
A motorcyclist walked away virtually unharmed from a traffic accident Thursday afternoon after he bailed off his motorcycle just before it collided with a sedan on Route 58.
The motorcyclist was riding his black Honda Nighthawk 750 south on Doctors Path about 2:20 p.m. when he saw he was going to hit a white Mercedes-Benz traveling eastbound on Route 58, according to the rider. The motorcyclist put his bike into a slide and rolled away from the bike as it became wedged under the sedan’s front bumper.
He walked away from the crash with only minor scrapes on his arms.
“I feel alive,” the man, who didn’t give his name, exclaimed after the accident. “I was up on my feet in two seconds.”
Riverhead firefighters and ambulance volunteers responded to the accident. The occupants of the sedan were also uninjured, officials said.
Fire crews put down sorbent material to absorb the gasoline that had leaked from the motorcycle after the crash. By 3 p.m. the crash was cleaned up and traffic in all directions was restored.
