Even now, five years later, when Riverhead coach Cheryl Walsh-Edwards looks at Katie Goodale, she still sees the face of the young blonde girl who tried out and made her field hockey team as an eighth-grader, the youngest player on the team. “I look at her now, she looks mature, but her face still looks the same,” said Walsh-Edwards.
Walsh-Edwards recalled talking to Goodale’s father back then and telling him, “She’s going to be on varsity and she’s going to play.”
Goodale hasn’t stopped playing since. The five-year varsity starter is the team’s longest-serving player. My how time flies. READ

The Riverhead Blue Waves had hoped to turn the Middle Country Mad Dogs into the Sad Dogs. It didn’t happen, but at the same time, the Blue Waves couldn’t feel too bad. Not even in defeat.
Riverhead overcame a five-goal deficit it faced early in the second half and tied the score, only to fall, 11-10, on Jennifer Barry’s free-position shot with 6 minutes, 31 seconds to go in a showdown Saturday between two undefeated, highly ranked Suffolk County Division I girls lacrosse teams. The Riverhead Blue Waves weren’t singing in the rain, but there might have been some dancing going on.
Certainly, there was plenty of smiling and laughing on the Riverhead side as its girls lacrosse team celebrated the first Suffolk County quarterfinal win in the team’s eight-year history Saturday afternoon. Delu Rizzo’s goal off a return pass from Lauren Kenny with 30 seconds left in the second half snapped a tie, giving Riverhead a thrilling 13-12 victory over Middle Country at Nick DeCillis Field in Selden. With that, the fifth-seeded Blue Waves (11-5) move on to the Suffolk Class A semifinals against the Division I champion and No. 1 seed, Northport (17-0), on Wednesday. READ
Last year, the Riverhead girls lacrosse team reached the playoffs for the first time in program history. It didn’t take long for the Blue Waves to record their first win once they were in. READ
Spring has sprung and a new season has begun.
Not that it felt or looked like spring. Banks of snow were piled along the sides of the girls lacrosse field at the Pulaski Sports Complex in Riverhead (with the promise of more snow to come) and temperatures were in the mid-30s. Just a few hours after spring officially arrived, Mattituck/Southold and Riverhead ushered in their own season with Tuesday’s non-league game. READ
