Lifelong Riverhead resident Jane Nugent Wanat died Oct. 17 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 81 years old.
She was born April 19, 1932, in Riverhead to Victor and Elizabeth Nugent and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1952. A homemaker, Ms. Wanat loved gardening, basket weaving and quilting, according to family members, and was involved in many organizations including the National Audubon Society, the World Wildlife Fund, the Arbor Day Foundation, the Riverhead Garden Club and the North Fork Basket Weavers Guild.
Predeceased by her son Gery Robert, Ms. Wanat is survived by her husband, John; her son John Jr. and daughters, Jane M. and Victoria Wanat and Lynn Barauskas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family received visitors Oct. 20 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Oct. 21 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead followed by interment at the church cemetery.
