A crash between a tractor trailer and car around 7:20 a.m. shut down several miles of Flanders Road for over five hours this morning, as the drivers of both vehicles were hospitalized.

According to Southampton Town Police, a tractor trailer driving northbound on Flanders Road collided with a Toyota Corolla that was pulling out of Red Creek road, spilling sand throughout the roadway.

Both cars ended up on the opposite side of the roadway in the collision, which caused the trailer to turn over on its side and on top of the Corrola.

Flanders and Hampton Bays Fire Departments extricated the driver while a rapid recovery team lifted the truck off of the car.

The driver of the sedan was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital via medvac, and the driver of the tractor trailer to a local hospital via ambulance.

While investigating the crash, police shut down Flanders Road between Bellows Pond Road and Pleasure Drive.

The trailer is owned by Steven Mezynieski, Inc. of Southampton.
