Riverhead Raceway: Bonsignore drives to victory in Riverhead 200

The numbers and stars lined up just right for 28-year-old Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville as he drove to victory in the Riverhead 200 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at Riverhead Raceway Saturday night. The race was his 100th career WMT start and when he pulled into victory lane he celebrated his 10th career win with family and friends.

Bonsignore led the final 117 laps to secure his second WMT win of 2016.

The win, coupled with a rough night for championship leader Doug Coby of Milford, Connecticut. who was 15th, moved Bonsignore to within 13 points of Coby for the WMT title.

Timmy Solomito turned in a runner-up finish in the race. Shawn Solomito crossed the line third. Tommy Rogers Jr. of Riverhead wowed fans with his 29th-to-fourth-place finish while Chase Dowling of Roxbury, Massachusetts, was fifth. Jimmy Blewett of Howell, New Jersey, Craig Lutz of Miller Place, Max Zachem of Preston, Connecticut, Frank Vigliarolo Jr. of Mount Sinai and Eric Goodale of Riverhead completed the top 10.

Earlier, three NASCAR Whelen All American Series preliminary races were contested, with Dillon Steuer of Bohemia, Tommy Walkowiak of Ridge and Richie Davidowitz of East Moriches taking victories.

In a 25-lap Modified Crate event, the 14-year-old Steuer held off runner-up Dave Brigati of Calverton and third-place Dylan Slepian of Dix Hills for the victory. Before Steuer returns to Riverhead Raceway over the Labor Day weekend, he has mid-week races planned on the dirt at the Georgetown Speedway in Delaware and the Lebanon Valley Speedway in upstate New York.

For the second time in three races, Walkowiak triumphed in a 20-lap Blunderbust feature. It was his 58th career victory. Tom Pickerell of Huntington was second and Eric Zeh of Selden third.

Davidowitz posted his third INEX Legend Race Car victory of the season in a 20-lap main event. Kyle Ellwood of Riverhead and John Beatty Jr. of Merrick were the next two finishers.
