Nicholas Deschamps, company senior chief with the Riverhead Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and commander of its academic team, received an appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, and will plan on attending starting next summer.

The Riverhead High School senior plans on pursuing an engineer degree at the academy, which is one of five U.S. service academies, along with the Military Academy, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Air Force Academy.

“Nicholas is the first Riverhead NJROTC cadet I am aware of to receive an Appointment to this Academy,” noted the unit’s naval science instructor Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy. “Like last summer, Nicholas will be very busy this summer. He begins the academy on July 1st.”

The NJROTC’s drill team is one of 12 teams out of 58 to qualify for the Area Four Championship Meet in Colt’s Neck, N.J. on March 1st. This year’s meet will be the 7th consecutive year Riverhead has qualified for the championship competition.
