The Shoreham Wading-River Board of Education elected John Zukowski and Robert Rose as its new president and vice president, respectively, at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Mr. Zukowski, an attorney who was first elected in 2011, said he did not specifically seek the position.

“My view of being board president is that I’m here to run the meeting and set the agenda,” he said in an interview. “Other than that, I’m strictly a trustee.”

As president, though, he said he has “the same goals we’ve always had” while facing the familiar challenge of maintaining a suitable budget.

“We want to improve our curriculum, we want to continue to address the bond the community gave us and do a better job of outreach to the community,” he said.

Mr. Zukowski’s nomination was unopposed and he was sworn in after a 4-0 vote, with Mr. Rose, Bill McGrath, Michael Fucito and John Costas voting in favor. Mr. Zukowski abstained from voting and school board members Richard Pluschau and Sean Beran were absent.

As hands were raised to signify votes for Mr. Zukowski, his predecessor, Mr. McGrath, said, “You silly, silly man,” while laughing with the rest of the board and the audience.

Mr. McGrath then nominated Mr. Fucito to continue as the school board’s vice president. The measure was defeated after only Mr. McGrath voted for Mr. Fucito, who voted with the remaining board members for Mr. Rose.
