The unemployment rate in Riverhead continues to drop compared to last year, according to this month’s statistics released by the county Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs.

July’s unemployment rate in Riverhead was 4.6 percent, which is a slight increase from June’s 4.3 percent but almost a full percentage point lower than July 2014’s rate of 5.4.

Riverhead has seen a speedier recovery than the county as a whole. The countywide unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in July compared to 5.5 percent a year earlier — half the change that Riverhead saw.

On a state level, unemployment fell from 6.1 percent in July 2014 to 5.4 percent in July 2015. Similarly, the seasonally adjusted national rate dropped from 6.2 percent in July 2014 to 5.3 percent in July 2015.

Between July of last year and July of this year, Nassau and Suffolk Counties added a combined 19,200 nonfarm jobs and 19,900 private sector jobs. Those numbers are not seasonally adjusted and they include government jobs.
