Update: Riverhead cheerleading team places 14th at UCA Nationals

UPDATE (10:45 p.m.): Riverhead placed 14th in the finals Sunday of the Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Cheerleading Championship. Sachem East (ninth) and Longwood (sixth) were the top school from Suffolk County in Small Varsity Division I.

Original Story: The Riverhead varsity cheerleading team advanced to the finals of the Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Cheerleading Championship for the second straight year.

The Blue Waves completed their first routine Saturday morning at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. They scored high enough to advance straight to the finals Sunday night and bypass the semifinals. The Blue Waves are competing in Small Varsity Division I.

The team huddled together as the public address announcer listed the teams advancing Saturday morning. The girls erupted in celebration when Riverhead was called out, according to a video posted online by coach Stephanie Piraino.

Riverhead competes at 8:38 p.m. Sunday in the finals where the Blue Waves will be vying for their best finish ever at nationals.

When the Blue Waves earned their spot at nationals back in December, Piraino called it a “dream year.” As it turns out, that dream was just beginning.

Live streaming of the competition is available online through Varsity TV. (Signup and fee required)
