Riverhead FD volunteers battle blaze on Third Street in Calverton

The Riverhead Fire Department battled a mobile home fire on Third Street in Calverton Sunday afternoon.

Riverhead Chief Kevin Brooks, who was first on the scene of the fire, said he arrived to find the back half of the residence fully involved.

“It was already through the roof when I got there,” the chief said. “The guys made a really good hit on it though and, [mobile homes] can be difficult to put out, but they did a great job.”

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, according to Chief Brooks.

Emergency officials received a report of the fire at 1:39 p.m. The chief said volunteers remained on the scene for about 90 minutes.

Riverhead police and ambulance officials assisted at the scene. Volunteers from the Flanders Fire Department were on standby at Riverhead FD headquarters, the chief said.

The Riverhead Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, he added.

Clarification: An earlier version of this post did not distinguish that the fire was on Third Street in Calverton. We regret the oversight.
