Aquebogue mosquito tests positive for West Nile Virus

An Aquebogue mosquito was one of 25 to test positive for West Nile Virus, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced on Thursday.

The positive test comes just over a week after mosquitos tested positve in Riverhead and Southold.

So far this season, 54 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus, and three mosquito samples have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus. Two deceased crows found in Ronkonkoma on June 24, and one found on August 5 in Nesconset, also tested positive for West Nile virus.

No humans have tested positive for West Nile virus this year, health officials said.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, and most infected people will experience mild or no symptoms. However, some can develop mild to severe symptoms including headaches, neck stiffness, loss of vision, high fevers, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis and even death.

Dead birds could indicate the presence of West Nile virus.
