Photo gallery: Garlic-eating champ downs 21 cloves at Waterdrinker festival
Things got pungent Saturday at the 24th annual Waterdrinker North Fork Garlic Festival on Sound Avenue, where contestants had two minutes to eat as many garlic cloves as they could.
Joe Gignac won after putting away 21 cloves — although his strategy quickly abandoned any attempt at peeling them first.
“I wish I had time to peel them, but I just went in,” Mr. Gignac said. “I peeled the first one, ate the first one, then I knew I wasn’t going to have time to peel the rest. It made it way worse but I was able to get them down. It was a fun day. I had a great time with the family. I got to mess with my buddy. It was just good old family fun.”
